Rolls-Royce Powers NOVVA’s Expansion with Sustainable Solutions

The winning partnership between Rolls-Royce and NOVVA continues to thrive! Through its distributor Smith Power Products, Rolls-Royce will supply two 1,500kW mtu Kinetic PowerPacks (KPPs) to NOVVA that will serve as emergency backup power for our expanding data center in Colorado Springs. This new order continues a robust partnership, adding to the over 50MW of mtu emergency diesel gensets already provided by Rolls-Royce to NOVVA’s various locations.

Commitment to Sustainability

Environmental responsibility has always been a key value driving our organizational decisions and this partnership is no exception. Our commitment to sustainability influenced our choice of the KPPs largely due to the battery-free design and capability to run on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) or renewable diesel aligning perfectly with our environmental goals. Additionally, Smith Power Products will supply a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to significantly reduce nitrogen oxide emissions during operation. The KPPs also come with custom enclosures that include 24-hour fuel storage.

Advanced UPS Technology

The project’s advantages extend beyond its sustainability benefits. The KPPs also represent a dynamic UPS system, using stored kinetic energy from a flywheel to provide immediate power until the diesel engine starts, eliminating the need for battery backups. This immediate response capability ensures continuous power without interruption.

Manufacturing and Maintenance

Manufactured at Rolls-Royce’s competence center in Liege, Belgium, the KPPs are set to be commissioned in Q4 2024. Rolls-Royce will support the installation with a full-service maintenance contract, guaranteeing optimal performance throughout their 20+ year lifecycle.

Partnerships like this are just one of the many ways NOVVA is staying ahead of the curve and bringing the best to its customers. Read more about this announcement and other exciting news here
